An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Data Engineer to join a highly skilled operations team. This role is perfect for someone who thrives on solving intricate data challenges and enjoys collaborating with talented professionals across multiple business units.

The successful candidate will play a pivotal part in ensuring the seamless flow of high-quality data throughout the organisation’s systems, supporting strategic decision-making and driving operational efficiency.

What you'll do:

As a Senior Data Engineer, you will be instrumental in managing complex data infrastructure while providing strategic support across various business units. Your day-to-day activities will involve diagnosing intricate issues within distributed systems, optimising data pipelines for maximum efficiency, and leveraging your expertise with both cloud-based and on-premises technologies.
You will also play an essential role in mentoring junior engineers, guiding them through technical challenges while fostering an inclusive culture of learning. By implementing automation tools for monitoring and workflow orchestration, you will help reduce operational overheads.

Your commitment to creating thorough documentation will ensure that best practices are maintained throughout the organisation. Success in this role requires not only technical proficiency but also a passion for collaboration and knowledge sharing.

  • Diagnose and resolve complex data integration and processing issues across large-scale distributed systems, ensuring minimal downtime and high availability of critical data services.
  • Oversee, optimise, and maintain robust data pipelines (ETL/ELT) across both on-premise and cloud environments, guaranteeing seamless data flow from source to target systems.
  • Proactively identify enhancements to improve data throughput, scalability, and resource efficiency, implementing solutions that drive operational excellence.
  • Provide expert-level support for a wide range of data tools, platforms, and technologies including relational and NoSQL databases, cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, as well as ETL frameworks.
  • Guide junior team members on effective use of advanced technologies through mentorship and technical leadership.
  • Implement automated monitoring systems to proactively detect data anomalies, system failures, and performance issues using scripting and orchestration tools like Python, Bash, or Apache Airflow.
  • Lead post-incident reviews by conducting thorough root cause analysis for any disruptions in data services and implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Develop detailed reports and documentation of incidents and resolutions to contribute towards continuous improvement processes within the team.
  • Create comprehensive technical documentation for all data systems, workflows, and troubleshooting procedures to ensure best practices are consistently applied.
  • Foster a collaborative environment by developing knowledge-sharing resources for internal teams and promoting professional development.

What you bring:

The ideal Senior Data Engineer will bring extensive experience gained from working with large-scale architectures in both cloud-based and traditional environments. Your background should include deep familiarity with SQL and NoSQL database management as well as advanced programming skills for automating processes.
You will have demonstrated success in diagnosing challenging issues within distributed systems while optimising performance at every stage. Your analytical mindset enables you to quickly identify root causes of problems while your interpersonal skills allow you to communicate effectively across departments.

Experience mentoring junior staff is highly valued as is your ability to foster an inclusive atmosphere where everyone feels supported. A commitment to continuous learning ensures you stay up-to-date with evolving technologies so you can deliver dependable solutions that meet organisational needs.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Information Systems or related field; Master’s degree is considered an advantage.
  • At least 10 years of hands-on experience in a data support, engineering or operations role with exposure to large-scale architectures and cloud-based solutions.
  • Expert-level proficiency in SQL databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL or Redshift as well as NoSQL databases like MongoDB or Cassandra.
  • Advanced skills in programming languages including Python, Scala or Java for integration, automation and problem-solving tasks.
  • In-depth experience with major cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) along with Microsoft services such as Azure Storage, Databricks, Synapse Analytics or Purview.
  • Comprehensive understanding of data warehousing concepts plus hands-on experience with ETL/ELT methodologies using relevant tools (e.g., Databricks).
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose complex issues within data processing workflows while optimising delivery performance at scale.
  • Strong analytical abilities with proven experience identifying and resolving highly complex data issues efficiently.
  • Ability to assess business needs accurately then translate them into technical solutions that enhance workflows and analytics capabilities.
  • Excellent communication skills enabling you to explain technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders; experience leading cross-functional teams is highly desirable.
