About the Role

The Chief Underwriting Officer (CUO) provides strategic leadership and oversight of all underwriting activities across facultative, treaty, MGA operations and Lloyd's syndicate participation. The role is accountable for delivering underwriting profitability, optimising portfolio performance and ensuring robust governance and compliance.
Working closely with Actuarial, Claims, Investment and IT functions, the CUO drives pricing discipline, risk selection and innovation. The position also requires regular engagement with Board Committees and senior stakeholders, providing insight on underwriting performance, risk exposure and market opportunities while shaping long-term growth strategies aligned to business objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Underwriting Strategy & Governance
  • Define and implement underwriting strategy, policies and risk appetite
  • Oversee pricing methodologies and portfolio segmentation
  • Act as referral authority for complex and large risks
  1. Portfolio Management
  • Monitor portfolio performance and profitability metrics
  • Identify emerging risks and growth opportunities
  • Produce and review performance and exposure reports
  1. Operations & Analytics
  • Oversee underwriting operations, reporting and dashboards
  • Ensure governance, compliance and audit adherence
  • Drive technology-enabled underwriting capabilities
  1. Financial & Performance Management
  • Manage underwriting budgets and financial targets
  • Optimise capital allocation and returns
  • Monitor receivables, credit control and EPI reviews
  1. Business Development & Market Engagement
  • Lead product development and market expansion initiatives
  • Strengthen relationships with cedants, brokers and partners
  • Represent the business at key industry events
  1. Leadership & People Management
  • Lead, mentor and develop underwriting teams
  • Drive capability building and competency frameworks
  • Ensure effective team performance and succession planning
Qualifications & Experience
  • Minimum 7 years' underwriting experience (facultative & treaty)
  • Degree in Actuarial Science, Insurance or Finance
  • Professional qualifications (ACII, FCII, AMII, CPCU or equivalent)
  • Strong leadership, strategic thinking and stakeholder management skills
